Base magnet or back magnet
A base magnet lets the light stand on a horizontal surface and hang from a vertical one while still aiming where you want. A back magnet only lets it lie flat against whatever it is stuck to, which fixes the beam direction for you. For work, the base magnet is almost always the one you want, and it is visible in any product photograph.
NEBO publishes a magnetic base on the BIG LARRY 3, the FRANKLIN TaskBar, the SLIM Mini 500 and the LEO 1800 Flex. Streamlight publishes a magnet on the Syclone alongside a clip and a stand, which is the most flexible arrangement here — three ways to position it rather than one.
There is a third arrangement worth knowing about: a magnetic tailcap on an ordinary handheld flashlight. Wurkkos publishes one on the FC11. It converts a pocket light into a temporary work light, and it is the single most useful feature to look for on a general-purpose light you also want to use in a garage.

What no manufacturer publishes
Pull force. Not one of the specifications we read states how much weight the magnet holds or at what angle. That means the most important property of a magnetic light is invisible on paper, and anyone ranking these lights by magnet strength without having handled them is inventing the ranking.
We are not going to do that. What we can do is tell you what the physics implies: a larger magnet contact area holds better, a rubber-coated magnet grips better on a painted surface but holds less on bare steel, and a magnet mounted on a light with any real mass needs to be substantially stronger to hold on a vertical face.

Every number on this page is one you can check yourself in about two minutes.
Where a magnet is the wrong answer
- Aluminum vehicles and boats — an increasing amount of modern bodywork is not ferrous, and the magnet holds nothing at all.
- Around loose steel swarf, which the magnet collects and then drags across whatever you next set it down on.
- Near a mechanical watch, a compass, a magnetic-stripe card or a hard drive.
- On finished paintwork, where grit trapped under a bare magnet is a scratch waiting to happen. Prefer a rubber-coated magnet here.
For non-ferrous work, a hook or a clip is worth more than a magnet. Streamlight's Syclone has both, which is why it appears on nearly every work-light page on this site.
Common questions
How strong is the magnet on a work light?
No manufacturer we read publishes a pull-force figure, so nobody can honestly rank these lights on magnet strength from specifications alone — including us. What you can judge from the published description is placement: a base magnet lets the light stand and aim, while a back magnet only lets it lie flat. Test the hold in person if you can.
Will a magnetic work light damage my car?
A bare magnet can scratch paint if grit gets trapped underneath, so wipe the contact face before sticking it to bodywork and prefer a rubber-coated magnet for finished surfaces. Also note that a great deal of modern bodywork is aluminum, where the magnet will not hold at all — for those, a hook or a clip is the more useful fitting.
How many lumens do I actually need?
For walking a dog, finding a fuse box or reading a map, 100 to 300 lumens is plenty and will run far longer. For a garage, a yard or a campsite, 500 to 1,000 lumens is comfortable. Above about 2,000 lumens you are buying a burst rather than a mode, because almost no handheld light can shed that much heat continuously.
