On a handheld light, output per dollar is the sensible first filter. On a headlamp it is not, because the constraint is not money, it is your neck. Every gram sits on the same forehead for the same number of hours, and a lamp you take off after an hour produces nothing at all for the rest of the night.
So the ordering here is weight, then published runtime at a usable low mode, then whether a spare battery exists, and only then output. That is genuinely different from the rest of this site and it is the correct order for the product.
A lamp under 90 grams with a published runtime table and a red mode. That covers camping, dog walks, power cuts and getting into a loft, and it is available at an ordinary price: Black Diamond publishes 400 lumens for four hours, 200 for eight and 6 for two hundred and twenty-five on the Spot 400-R, with an IP67 rating and a stated 86 grams.
If the lamp will ever be somewhere without power for more than a day, buy a hybrid instead. Petzl's ACTIK CORE runs on its CORE rechargeable pack or on three ordinary AAA cells and detects which it has. That single feature is worth more on a long trip than several hundred lumens.
By weight class, which is the real division: ultralight under 60 grams, general purpose around 80 to 100 grams, and work lamps above that with removable cells and higher output. By battery architecture: sealed, replaceable, or hybrid. And by beam: flood for close work and camp, spot for seeing down a trail, and the better lamps offering both under independent control.
Work lamps are worth calling out as genuinely different products. Fenix publishes 2,200 lumens, IP68, a two-meter impact rating and a removable 3,400 mAh 21700 on the HM65R V2.0. That is a tool bought for shift-length runtime and a swappable cell, and it is heavy for exactly those reasons.
Weight, water rating and battery architecture, roughly in that order. Getting a lamp under 50 grams while keeping a usable output and an IP66 rating is a genuine engineering achievement and it costs money. So does a removable cell in a sealed, waterproof housing.
Buying on the turbo figure. Nobody walks on turbo — you dip into it for a few seconds to look at something far away and then go back to the setting that lets you see your feet. The number that matters is the low-mode runtime, and it is often extraordinary: 225 hours at 6 lumens on the Spot 400-R, 45 hours at 6 lumens on the NU25.
The second mistake is ignoring the hinge and the strap, which decide whether the lamp is pleasant to wear and appear in no specification anywhere. That is a real limit of buying on numbers, and the reason to try a headlamp in a shop if you can.

For camp chores, tent use and a familiar path, 100 to 200 lumens is ample and runs for many hours. For hiking rough ground at night, 300 to 400 is comfortable. Above 1,000 lumens you are into work and search territory, where a spare battery matters more than the output does.
Under about 90 grams for comfort over a long evening, and under about 60 grams if you will wear it for hours at a time. NITECORE publishes 47 grams for the NU25 MCT UL including bracket and headband; Black Diamond publishes 86 grams for the Spot 400-R and Petzl 88 grams for the ACTIK CORE. The difference between the lightest and the heaviest is noticeable within an hour.
If you camp, share a tent, watch wildlife or read charts outdoors, yes. Red light at low intensity disturbs dark adaptation far less than white, so you can look at something and still see the ground afterwards, and it does not blind whoever is opposite you. What matters is whether the mode is one press away rather than three.
