The work specification
A work headlamp needs three things a recreational one does not: runtime that covers a shift at a usable brightness, a battery you can swap in the field, and published impact and water ratings. Fenix publishes IP68 and a two-meter impact rating on the HM65R V2.0 with a removable 3,400 mAh 21700; Petzl publishes a hybrid pack-or-AAA arrangement on the ACTIK CORE.
The swap matters more than anything else on that list. A recreational lamp running flat means an early night. A work lamp running flat at hour six of an eight-hour shift means the job stops. That is why a removable cell, or a fallback to ordinary batteries, outranks output on this page.

Flood beats throw at work
Almost all work happens within two meters of your face: a panel, a joint, an engine bay, a wall. What you want is a wide even flood, not a tight hotspot that lights a coin-sized circle on the thing you are working on and leaves the rest dark. A hotspot in a work lamp also blinds anyone who looks at you.

What we do instead: compile the manufacturer's own published ANSI FL1 figures, pull the price the light is selling for right now, and divide one by the other. Every number on this page is one you can check yourself in about two minutes.
The handheld alternative nobody mentions
For a lot of work, a magnetic COB work light stuck to the thing you are working on beats a headlamp entirely. It lights the job from a fixed angle instead of moving every time you turn your head, it does not blind your colleague, and it costs a fraction as much. NEBO's BIG LARRY 3 publishes a 600-lumen flood panel and runs on three AA cells.

Common questions
How many lumens should a work headlamp have?
Between 200 and 500 lumens of flood covers almost all close work, and running there rather than on maximum is what gets you through a shift. Higher outputs are useful for looking down a corridor or across a yard, but on a headlamp they are a mode you dip into rather than one you live in — heat and cell capacity both make sure of that.
Can you replace the battery in a work headlamp mid-shift?
Only on the models designed for it. Fenix's HM65R V2.0 takes a removable 3,400 mAh 21700 cell, so a charged spare in a pocket doubles your working night. Petzl's ACTIK CORE takes its CORE pack or three ordinary AAA cells. Lamps with integrated cells, including the NITECORE NU25 and Black Diamond Spot 400-R, cannot be swapped — when they are flat, they are flat.
Can you replace the battery in a rechargeable flashlight?
It depends entirely on the model, and it is the single most consequential thing to check before buying. Lights built around a standard cell — an 18650, a 21700, a 14500, a 16340 — take a screw-off tailcap and a five-dollar replacement. Lights with a built-in cell, which manufacturers describe as 'integrated' or 'non-removable', cannot be re-celled by an ordinary owner: when the battery reaches the end of its cycle life the whole light is refuse. Energizer, for example, states plainly that the Vision HD Rechargeable uses non-removable lithium-ion batteries.
