Why a work light is not a bright flashlight
Work happens within two meters of your hands, so the specification inverts: you want a wide even flood rather than a hotspot, high color rendering so wires and paint read correctly, and a runtime measured in hours rather than a peak measured in seconds. Streamlight publishes a 90 CRI flood at 300 lumens for two hours on the Syclone; that is a better work light than 2,000 lumens of spot.
A flashlight's tight hotspot is exactly wrong for close work. It lights a bright circle on the thing you are looking at, blows out your pupil response so everything around it goes black, and moves every time your hand does. A flood panel lights the whole area evenly at a lower intensity, which is far less tiring over an hour.
The second inversion is color. Under a cheap 70-CRI emitter, red and brown wiring look alike, dark paint is unreadable and corrosion is invisible. That is not an aesthetic complaint — it is a source of real mistakes. A 90-CRI flood costs a few dollars more and is the single biggest upgrade available in this category.

The magnet is a real specification
Almost every light here claims a magnetic base and they are not equivalent. A good magnet holds the light on a vertical panel through the vibration of an impact driver; a decorative one drops it into whatever you are working on. Manufacturers do not publish pull force, so this is one of the few attributes on this site we genuinely cannot rank — we can only tell you which lights have one and which do not.
What we can say is that a magnet on the base is more useful than a magnet on the back, because a base magnet lets the light stand and aim while a back magnet only lets it lie flat.

The pick to skip
The NEBO SLIM Mini 500 is on this page because it is a genuinely good flat task light with a published runtime table. It is also the wrong buy for anyone who needs a work light to last a shift: NEBO publishes a 450 mAh built-in cell, a 30-second turbo and two hours at 250 lumens. That is a pocket light for short jobs, not a bay light, and the sealed cell means it has a service life rather than a lifespan.
Rechargeable or AA?
For a work light that lives in a toolbox and gets used a few times a month, AA cells are genuinely the better answer — NEBO's BIG LARRY 3 and FRANKLIN TaskBar both run on three of them. A lithium cell left flat in a cold toolbox for six months is often unrecoverable; a set of AAs is not. For a light used daily on a job, rechargeable wins on running cost and on the steadier output lithium gives under load.
Common questions
How many lumens should a work light have?
For close work, 300 to 600 lumens of flood is plenty and will run for hours. Streamlight publishes 300 lumens of 90 CRI flood for two hours on the Syclone; NEBO publishes 600 lumens of COB flood on the BIG LARRY 3. Higher figures mostly buy you a shorter runtime and a light that is unpleasant to work under at arm's length.
What is CRI and does it matter for work lights?
CRI is the Color Rendering Index, a 0-to-100 measure of how accurately a light source shows colors compared with daylight. It matters enormously for work: under a 70-CRI light, red and brown wiring look similar and corrosion is hard to see. A 90-CRI flood, which Streamlight publishes for the Syclone, costs a little more and removes an entire category of mistake.
Can you replace the battery in a rechargeable flashlight?
It depends entirely on the model, and it is the single most consequential thing to check before buying. Lights built around a standard cell — an 18650, a 21700, a 14500, a 16340 — take a screw-off tailcap and a five-dollar replacement. Lights with a built-in cell, which manufacturers describe as 'integrated' or 'non-removable', cannot be re-celled by an ordinary owner: when the battery reaches the end of its cycle life the whole light is refuse. Energizer, for example, states plainly that the Vision HD Rechargeable uses non-removable lithium-ion batteries.
