Rechargeable Flashlights at Home Depot: What's Actually Worth Buying
A tool retailer sells tool lights. That is a genuine advantage for work lighting and a genuine limitation for everything else.

What a tool aisle is good at
A home-improvement retailer sells lighting for work, and work lighting is a genuinely different product: flood rather than throw, magnets and hooks rather than pocket clips, and runtime measured against a shift. If you want a light to work under, this is the right channel. If you want a pocket light, it is the wrong one.
The other thing a tool retailer does that nobody else does is sell lights that share a battery platform with cordless tools. If you already own a set of tool batteries, a work light that takes them is close to free to run and has effectively unlimited capacity. That is a real advantage and it does not show up in any lumens-per-dollar calculation, because the battery cost was already paid.

The platform question, before anything else
If you own cordless tools, check whether a work light exists for your platform before considering anything else. The arithmetic is entirely different: you already own the expensive part, the batteries are large enough that runtime stops being a constraint, and swapping a flat one takes two seconds.
If you do not own cordless tools, ignore platform lights entirely. Buying into a battery system for a work light is the most expensive way to buy a work light.
Checking a work light on the shelf
- 1.Is the emitter a flood panel or a spot? For work at arm's length you want flood. A tight hotspot lights a circle and blacks out everything around it.
- 2.Is the magnet on the base or the back? A base magnet lets the light stand and aim; a back magnet only lets it lie flat.
- 3.Is there a published CRI figure? A 90 CRI flood shows wiring colors correctly, which is diagnostic information rather than a refinement.
- 4.Is there a hook as well as a magnet? A great deal of modern bodywork and much structural material is not ferrous.
- 5.What is the runtime at the flood setting you will actually use — not at the spot maximum on the front of the box?

Is Home Depot a good place to buy a flashlight?
For work lighting, yes — flood panels, magnetic bar lights and lights that share a battery platform with cordless tools are exactly what a tool retailer does well, and being able to handle one before buying matters for a tool. For a pocket light or for best value per dollar, the direct-selling brands that lead our rankings are not stocked in physical tool aisles.
Should I buy a work light that uses my cordless tool batteries?
If you already own the platform, yes — you have paid for the expensive part, the packs are large enough that runtime stops being a constraint, and swapping a flat one takes seconds. If you do not own the platform, no: buying into a battery system for a single work light is the most expensive route to one.
How many lumens do I actually need?
For walking a dog, finding a fuse box or reading a map, 100 to 300 lumens is plenty and will run far longer. For a garage, a yard or a campsite, 500 to 1,000 lumens is comfortable. Above about 2,000 lumens you are buying a burst rather than a mode, because almost no handheld light can shed that much heat continuously.
