Best Rechargeable Headlamps for Hiking and Backpacking

A day hike and a five-day traverse want different lamps. The question that separates them is what happens when the battery is flat and there is no wall socket.

The question that decides this ranking

For a day hike, buy the lightest lamp with a published low-mode runtime. For anything longer than one night, buy a lamp you can put fresh power into without a wall socket. Petzl's ACTIK CORE runs on its CORE rechargeable pack or on three ordinary AAA cells and detects which it has; Fenix's HM65R V2.0 takes a removable 21700 you can carry a spare of. Sealed lamps — the NITECORE NU25 and Black Diamond Spot 400-R — are excellent and end your trip when they run flat.

That is the whole page in a paragraph, and it is why the order here is not the order on our running ranking. Running is a one-hour problem where mass decides everything. Backpacking is a multi-day problem where resupply decides everything, and the same four lamps sort differently against it.

Criterion one: can you feed it on trail?

Three days from a trailhead, a flat lamp with a sealed battery is a lamp you are carrying for no reason. There are only three real answers to that, and each has a cost.

  1. 1.Ordinary cells as a fallback. Petzl's HYBRID CONCEPT lets the ACTIK CORE run on three AAA cells when the CORE pack is done, and AAA cells are stocked in every trail-town store in the country. This is the most robust answer and it costs a little weight.
  2. 2.A removable lithium cell and a spare. Fenix's HM65R V2.0 takes a 3,400 mAh 21700 you can swap in seconds. This is the highest-output answer and it costs the most weight.
  3. 3.A power bank and a cable. Works with every lamp here including the sealed ones, and is what most people actually do. It costs pack weight you may already be carrying for a phone, and it is the slowest of the three.

Notice that the sealed lamps are not disqualified — they are simply dependent on option three. If you carry a power bank anyway, a sealed lamp is fine and the weight argument takes over. If you do not, the hybrid lamp is the only one that cannot strand you.

Criterion two: runtime per gram, not runtime

Every gram on this page is a gram you carry up a hill, so the useful figure is not how long a lamp runs but how long it runs for what it weighs. On that measure the ultralight lamps do far better than their raw numbers suggest.

Black Diamond's 225 hours at 6 lumens deserves a second look, because on a backpacking trip it changes what the lamp is. Six lumens is enough to move around a tent, find something in a pack, read a map or walk a known path slowly. Two hundred and twenty-five hours of that is more than a week of realistic use, which means the Spot 400-R is effectively unlimited on low for any trip short of a thru-hike — and that substantially weakens the sealed-cell objection for most people.

Criterion three: the camp mode beats the trail mode

Count the hours honestly and most of a backpacking trip's lamp use is stationary: cooking, eating, finding things in a tent, reading, going out at 2 a.m. Very little of it is walking fast in the dark. That inverts the specification you should shop on — the low and medium modes and the red mode are the product, and the maximum is a tool you will use in bursts.

Red mode earns its place here for a social reason as much as a physiological one. In a shared camp or a hut, a white headlamp turned toward another person is genuinely unpleasant, and red is the difference between being a considerate camper and being the person everyone remembers. Cold, which the published runtimes do not cover

Lithium cells lose usable capacity as temperature drops, and recover when they warm up. None of the runtime figures on this page was measured on a frosty morning at altitude, so treat all of them as best-case numbers that shrink when it is cold.

The mitigation costs nothing: sleep with the lamp or the spare cell inside your bag, and keep the spare in an inside pocket rather than a pack lid during the day. It is also one more argument for the hybrid lamp, because lithium AAA cells hold up in cold far better than alkaline ones and the ACTIK CORE accepts either.

Lockout, the feature that decides whether you have light on night three

The most common way a backpacker's headlamp fails is not a short runtime. It is switching itself on inside a pack. A lamp pressed against a stuff sack for six hours of walking runs its battery down in silence, and you discover it at the worst possible moment on the worst possible night.

The fix is a lockout — a press-and-hold or a mechanical lock that disables the switch — and every serious lamp has one. The two things to establish about the lamp you buy are how you engage it and whether you will remember to. A lamp that locks with a long press you have to look up is a lamp that will be found switched on in a pack at least once.

The zero-cost alternative works on any lamp including one without a lockout: reverse the battery, or if the cell is sealed, stow the lamp with the bezel facing out where nothing presses on the switch. On a hybrid lamp like the ACTIK CORE you can simply carry the AAA cells separately for the walking day and fit them at camp, which also keeps them warm.

Charging on trail, realistically

If your plan is a power bank, do the arithmetic before the trip rather than on it. NITECORE publishes a 700 mAh cell for the NU25 and Black Diamond an integrated 1,500 mAh cell for the Spot 400-R. A modest 10,000 mAh bank will refill either of those many times over, so for lamp duty alone a small bank is ample — the reason people carry large ones is phones, not headlamps.

Two practical notes. Charging losses are real, so treat a bank's nameplate capacity as optimistic rather than exact. And Black Diamond still ships the Spot 400-R with micro-USB, which means a second cable on a trip where everything else is USB-C — a small annoyance that compounds over a week and is the most legitimate complaint about an otherwise excellent lamp. There is one more reason to prefer a lamp that takes ordinary cells on a long trip, and it is about margin rather than capacity. A power bank is a single point of failure for every device you carry — phone, watch, lamp, satellite messenger. A lamp that can run on three AAA cells bought in any store is the one item on that list which does not depend on the bank surviving the trip, and on a route where the lamp is the safety-critical device that independence is worth its small weight penalty.

Water ratings for multi-day weather

Fenix publishes IP68 on the HM65R V2.0, Black Diamond IP67 on the Spot 400-R tested to one meter for thirty minutes, NITECORE IP66 on the NU25, and Petzl IPX4 on the ACTIK CORE. IPX4 is a rain rating, and for most hiking that is genuinely adequate because the lamp is on your head and your head is above the weather.

It stops being adequate in sustained multi-day rain, on a river crossing, or if the lamp lives clipped to the outside of a pack. That is a real limitation on the lamp we otherwise rank first here, and it is stated rather than buried — our fishing ranking puts the same lamp last for the same reason.

How we ranked these

The four scored attributes published on our methodology page — output against live price, battery architecture, weight, and usability — with battery architecture read specifically as resupply rather than as long-term ownership cost. A lamp you can feed from a shop in a trail town scores above one that is cheaper per hour, which is why the hybrid lamp leads a field that contains brighter and lighter lamps than it.

How we work this out · How picks get chosen and changed

A last practical note on the red mode, which is easy to dismiss as a gimmick until you share a shelter. Red preserves your own dark adaptation, and it is also the difference between finding your socks at 5 a.m. and waking everybody in the hut. Every lamp here has one; what varies is how many presses away it is, and a lamp where red is reachable from off is worth choosing over one where it sits behind white.

If you are only buying one lamp

  • Day hikes and evening walks only: buy the lightest lamp with a published low-mode runtime and do not think about fallback power. The weight is what you will notice.
  • Occasional overnights, and you already carry a power bank for a phone: a sealed lamp is fine, and the 225-hour low mode on the Black Diamond means you are unlikely to ever test the limit.
  • Multi-day trips without reliable power: buy the hybrid. Ordinary AAA cells are the only power source that works everywhere, and Petzl is the only brand here that builds for it.
  • Winter, caving, or anything where you genuinely need to see a long way: the Fenix, and carry the spare cell warm.

What we cannot tell you

We have not carried any of these lamps on a trip. We cannot tell you how each strap sits under a hood or a beanie, how the switches work with cold fingers or gloves, how the beams read on a rooty trail at 5 a.m., or how any of them behave well below freezing — which is exactly where the published runtimes stop being reliable. What we can do is read four published specifications and rank them against the constraint that actually defines this use case, which is distance from a wall socket.

What is the best headlamp for backpacking?

For trips longer than one night, a lamp you can feed without a wall socket. The Petzl ACTIK CORE runs on its CORE rechargeable pack or on three ordinary AAA cells and detects which is fitted, which makes it the hardest of these to strand. If you already carry a power bank, the sealed lamps become competitive and the lighter one wins — NITECORE publishes 47 grams including the band for the NU25 MCT UL.

How many lumens do you need for hiking at night?

Between 100 and 300 lumens covers walking on a trail comfortably, and most of a trip is spent far below that — 6 to 50 lumens is enough for camp chores, cooking and finding things in a tent. Black Diamond publishes 225 hours at 6 lumens on the Spot 400-R, which is more than a week of realistic camp use. Buy on the low-mode figure, not the maximum.

Do rechargeable headlamps work in cold weather?

They work, but lithium cells deliver less of their capacity as temperature drops and recover when warmed, so published runtimes are best-case figures that shrink in the cold. Keep the lamp or its spare cell in an inside pocket or your sleeping bag. A lamp that also accepts lithium AAA cells, as the Petzl ACTIK CORE does, is the most robust cold-weather answer because those cells cope with low temperatures far better than alkaline.

How long does a rechargeable flashlight battery last?

Lithium-ion cells are generally rated in charge cycles rather than years, and a cell that has lost enough capacity to be annoying is usually still working — just for half as long. Some manufacturers publish the figure: Petzl rates the CORE pack at 2 years or 300 charging cycles, and Maglite quotes up to 2,000 cycles for the LiFePO4 pack in the ML150LRS. Most brands publish nothing at all, which is why a replaceable cell matters more than any published cycle rating.
