The household plan, in one paragraph
A house needs four lighting roles covered, not one perfect flashlight: a lantern where people will sit, a handheld near where you sleep, a headlamp for anyone who has to do something with their hands, and a spare wherever the electrical panel is. Standardize on one battery size across all four so a single box of cells covers the house.
Almost every household lighting failure is a distribution problem rather than an equipment problem. People own a perfectly good flashlight and it is in the kitchen drawer while they are upstairs. Solving that costs less than buying a better light.

The four roles
1. The lantern where people sit
One area light on the table where the household ends up. Fifty to a hundred lumens is comfortable and runs for a very long time — Streamlight publishes 37 hours at 50 lumens on the Siege AA and NEBO publishes 10.5 hours at 100 lumens on the GALILEO 1000. This is the light that turns an outage from an ordeal into an evening.
2. The handheld by the bed
Something you can find in the dark without getting out of bed, ideally with a low mode that will not wake anyone. This does not need to be the brightest light in the house; it needs to be the one you can definitely locate.
3. The headlamp for whoever is doing something
Resetting a breaker, checking a boiler, clearing a drain, finding the stopcock. All of those need both hands. Petzl publishes 625 lumens to ANSI/PLATO FL 1 on the ACTIK CORE, which also runs on three AAA cells when its pack is flat — the correct arrangement for a light that lives in a cupboard.
4. The spare at the panel
The consumer unit is usually in the least convenient part of the house, and it is where you will go first. A cheap magnetic work light stuck to the box itself is the right answer here; NEBO publishes a 600-lumen COB flood on the BIG LARRY 3 with a magnetic base, running on three AA cells.

How we ranked these
Published output over live price, adjusted heavily for storage behavior and for whether ordinary cells can re-power the light. Runtime at a comfortable low setting is treated as the headline figure throughout, because a household outage is measured in evenings rather than minutes.

Every publisher in this category says they tested twenty flashlights. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the manufacturer's own published ANSI FL1 figures, pull the price the light is selling for right now, and divide one by the other. Every number on this page is one you can check yourself in about two minutes.
Standardize the battery
If every light in the plan takes AA cells, one box in a cupboard covers the whole house, and you will actually have spares because buying them is a single decision. Mixing AA, AAA, D and two proprietary lithium packs means that during an outage you will have spares for everything except the light in your hand.
The one place to break that rule is the lantern, where a dual-power model earns its place: NEBO's GALILEO 1000 runs on its rechargeable pack day to day and on D cells when the pack is flat, and it has a USB output so it can charge a phone.
Candles, and why not
Open flame in a dark house full of people moving around is the reason emergency lighting exists. Beyond the obvious fire risk, a candle produces roughly a tenth of the useful light of a modest lantern and it goes out when a door opens. Keep them for atmosphere; do not plan around them.

How many flashlights should a house have?

Distribution matters more than quality — the most common failure is owning a good light that is in the wrong room.
What is the best emergency light for the home?
A lantern rather than a flashlight, because an outage is spent in rooms rather than in beams. Look for a long published runtime at a usable low setting — Streamlight publishes 37 hours at 50 lumens on the Siege AA — and ideally a model that accepts ordinary cells, since an outage is exactly when you cannot recharge anything.
How long does a rechargeable flashlight battery last?
Lithium-ion cells are generally rated in charge cycles rather than years, and a cell that has lost enough capacity to be annoying is usually still working — just for half as long. Some manufacturers publish the figure: Petzl rates the CORE pack at 2 years or 300 charging cycles, and Maglite quotes up to 2,000 cycles for the LiFePO4 pack in the ML150LRS. Most brands publish nothing at all, which is why a replaceable cell matters more than any published cycle rating.
