What 'for the money' actually means here
For the money means published lumens divided by the price the light is selling for today, adjusted for one thing the ratio cannot see: whether you can replace the battery. A $32 light with a sealed cell is a $32 purchase every three years. A $32 light that takes a standard 18650 is a $32 purchase plus a $6 cell whenever the old one tires.
Every competitor in this category ranks lights by feel and then writes a price band next to it. We do the division. The numerator comes from the manufacturer's own published specification, cited on each pick. The denominator comes from a live retail price pulled from the retailer, stamped with the moment we pulled it. When we do not have a live price, the column says so rather than showing you a number that stopped being true weeks ago.
That leaves one adjustment the raw ratio cannot make. Two lights can produce identical lumens per dollar on the day you buy them and cost wildly different amounts to own. The one with a sealed lithium cell has an expiry date set by its charge cycles; the one built around a standard 18650 has an expiry date set by how long you keep it. We weight battery architecture heavily for that reason, and it is why a light with a smaller headline number sometimes finishes above one with a bigger one.

The one thing to check before you look at a single price
Open the specification and find the runtime. Not the runtime on low — the runtime at the number printed on the box. If the manufacturer publishes it, you are dealing with a brand that expects to be checked. If the row is missing, the number on the box is a peak the emitter can reach, and the manufacturer has declined to say for how long.
This is not a hypothetical. NEBO publishes a complete mode table for the TORCHY 3K — 800 lumens for two hours on high, 250 for three and a half, 50 for twenty — and no runtime at all beside the 3,000-lumen turbo the product is named after. Energizer publishes up to twelve hours on low for the 3500XT-R and nothing beside the 3,500. Meanwhile Streamlight prints two hours next to the Stinger 2020's 2,000 lumens, and Wurkkos prints one hour fourteen minutes next to the TS10's 1,400. The brands that publish are not always the cheapest, but they are always the ones you can check.

How we ranked these
Four scored attributes, each out of ten: output against price, battery architecture, build quality as evidenced by the published ratings, and usability. Battery architecture carries the most weight, because it is the attribute that changes the answer over any period longer than a year. A light that takes a standard cell can be kept alive indefinitely for the price of a coffee; a light with an integrated cell cannot be kept alive at all.

Every publisher in this category says they tested twenty flashlights. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the manufacturer's own published ANSI FL1 figures, pull the price the light is selling for right now, and divide one by the other. Every number on this page is one you can check yourself in about two minutes.
What the ranking looks like over three years, not one day
Take two lights that each cost about the same and each claim roughly 1,200 to 2,000 lumens. The first takes an 18650. Over three years you might buy one replacement cell. The second seals its battery in. Over three years, if you use it regularly, you buy the light again. The lumens-per-dollar column on day one cannot see that difference, which is exactly why it is not the only column.
There is a second, quieter cost. A sealed light that has sat in a drawer for two years will very often be flat, and there is nothing you can do about it in the moment. A light with a removable cell can be revived in ten seconds with a spare. Where the value curve stops paying
Below roughly the twenty-dollar mark, the standard cell disappears first, then the published runtime, then the water rating. Between twenty and fifty dollars you can have all three, which is why that band contains most of this site's recommendations. Above about eighty dollars you are no longer buying light per dollar; you are buying documentation, warranty coverage, spare-parts availability and consistency between units. The pick most people should stop reading and buy
If you want one sentence: a light built around a standard 18650 with a published IP rating and USB-C charging in the body, from a brand that prints a runtime somewhere on its spec sheet. That describes the Sofirn and the Wurkkos at the top of this table, and it will keep describing whichever light replaces them when they are discontinued. The specification matters more than the model name.
Common questions
Can you replace the battery in a rechargeable flashlight?
It depends entirely on the model, and it is the single most consequential thing to check before buying. Lights built around a standard cell — an 18650, a 21700, a 14500, a 16340 — take a screw-off tailcap and a five-dollar replacement. Lights with a built-in cell, which manufacturers describe as 'integrated' or 'non-removable', cannot be re-celled by an ordinary owner: when the battery reaches the end of its cycle life the whole light is refuse. Energizer, for example, states plainly that the Vision HD Rechargeable uses non-removable lithium-ion batteries.
How many lumens do I actually need?
For walking a dog, finding a fuse box or reading a map, 100 to 300 lumens is plenty and will run far longer. For a garage, a yard or a campsite, 500 to 1,000 lumens is comfortable. Above about 2,000 lumens you are buying a burst rather than a mode, because almost no handheld light can shed that much heat continuously.
What is the best rechargeable flashlight for the money?
On published output divided by price, lights built around a standard 18650 cell from Sofirn and Wurkkos lead this ranking, because they pair two thousand and thirteen hundred published lumens respectively with a battery that costs a few dollars to replace. The correct answer for you depends on one question the ratio cannot answer: whether the light will be used often, in which case value wins, or left in a drawer for two years, in which case a light that takes AA cells is the safer buy.
Is a more expensive flashlight actually brighter?
Usually not by much, and often not at all. A $150 Streamlight Stinger 2020 publishes 2,000 lumens; a Sofirn SC31 Pro at a fraction of the price publishes 2,000 as well. What the extra money buys is a published runtime beside that number, an IPX7 rating, a two-meter impact test, a warranty and consistency between units — none of which show up in a lumens-per-dollar column, and all of which matter if the light has to work every single time.
Do any of these lights come with the battery included?
It varies by model and by seller, and it changes often enough that we will not state it as a fact per light. Check the listing before you buy: a light sold without its 18650 needs a cell and a charger to be useful, and that changes the arithmetic on this page by several dollars.
